Local business woman nominated for National AusMumpreneur Awards
Angelica Dellaway owner of NEST 2 ME Online Baby and Parenting Store, based in the Glasshouse Mountains Region of Queensland, has been awarded Finalist for the 2016 St George Banking Group AusMumpreneur Awards.
The AusMumpreneur Awards presented by The AusMumpreneur Network celebrate and recognise Australian Mums in business achieving outstanding success in areas such as business excellence, product development, customer service and digital innovation. The awards are designed to recognise the growing number of women who successfully balance motherhood and business in a way that suits their life and family.
Angelica is a Business Owner/Manager, Teacher, Fitness Instructor and Work at Home Mum. After a career in Primary School Teaching, Angelica was on maternity leave with her first child in 2008. She had originally planned to return to teaching after 6-12 months, however like many mothers, as time went on she decided she didn’t feel ready to go back to her teaching career just yet and instead trained as a fitness instructor around looking after her first born, followed by her next child.
For what started out as somewhat of a hobby, quickly became a part-time Health and Fitness business in 2009. This taught her the fundamentals of setting up a business and operating all areas of a business. After quite a few years in the fitness industry, working late night and weekend classes, with some recurring injuries, she decided to take a break and focus on the online retail sector of the business.
With the introduction of new product lines, the creation of a new e-commerce website and re-branding, her natural health store quickly grew into an online store specialising in nurturing parenting products for bump, baby and beyond including baby carriers, organic health products for families, gift hampers, products for breastfeeding, pregnancy and more. Now stocking a huge range of well-known brands from around the World, along with local Australian products handcrafted by other Work at Home Mums.
Nest 2 Me has become a busy online retail store servicing customers Australia wide and into Singapore, New Zealand, United Kingdom, United States and Canada. Business Owner Ang is ever grateful for the continued growth of the business and loves that she is helping our local economy by supporting other small businesses in our Glasshouse region.
There are many benefits to balancing business and motherhood as Angelica explains, “I love the flexibility that running my own business allows me. I manage my work hours to suit around many other family commitments. My working hours are often far from the typical office hours and do change day to day (and even well into the night) depending on school events, after-school activities for my children, when my husband arrives home from his work day and so on. I also love the freedom it allows me to be creative, utilising many different skills and knowledge areas that I have developed over the years from my previous careers and also from being a Mum."
"Starting up my own businesses after having children brought back a sense of self-achievement, new learning and progress again. In addition, it is enjoyable to mix time home with the kids with ‘adult time’ through my business also. I am able to set goals and aspirations to aim for, help to support my family financially, yet still with the ability to make myself available as needed for when my children are sick, or I want to volunteer at the Kindy or School and attend special events. It has definitely been many hours of hard work building up my business to where it is today, and still is, in maintaining continual business growth - but I love it! I feel a passion for working in my industry every day and am passionate about being a Stay Home Mum as well as a Mumpreneur.”
It can be challenging to be a successful Business Woman whilst raising a family and Ang gives this advice for others thinking about starting their own enterprise. “Persistence and embracing change and new ideas is key. Running a business in any industry can be so dynamic and interchangeable. Maintaining an open mind, embracing change and trying to perceive set backs as a potential new opening for another favourable opportunity to come your way soon, is a valuable lesson. Also I recommend setting up simple daily and weekly routines that work for you when you run your own business, especially when working from home so you have some form of structure to settle into and increased productivity, when there can be so many distractions. When things get too busy, look into external service providers or automatic application software that you can outsource to for tasks you are too busy to complete, or jobs around the house that you can’t get to.
I write down just 3 realistic main tasks each ‘work day’ and main projects for each week to focus on. Anything extra is a bonus (especially when taking care of little ones at the same time). This way I have a sense of achievement when I look back and realise just how much I have completed that I had set out to do.
It is also important to schedule in plenty of personal time so you don’t burn out. If your mind and body are overwhelmed, you cannot work at your best and are prone to error and lower productivity.
Make time for Mind Body and Soul.”
