Bamboo is a natural fibre and naturally loses moisture over time. To ensure long term use from your product it is important to retain the moisture within the Bamboo. This not only helps maintain the integrity of the Bamboo, but also helps disinfect the item due to the Fractionated Oils antibacterial qualities.
Fractionated coconut oil can also be used for many other uses. Unlike many plant-based oils, FCO (fractionated coconut oil) has a stable shelf life and it won’t go rancid. Plus it’s nut-free for those who can’t use the often-recommended walnut, almond, tung, or flaxseed oils. Rubbing fractionated coconut oil onto our bamboo plates and cutting boards will keep them nicely protected and you won’t have any problems with unwanted coconut flavor or smell.
Depending on how often you use your plates, you should also give them an oiling to help maintain their surface and keep them from drying out. In our house, this happens about once a fortnight.
Before you start, be sure your plates are very clean. I like to give them a scrub with lemon and salt. The plates should also be dry before oiling, so be sure to build that into your timing.
The oil should be left to soak in as long as possible, too. Try to apply the oil in the evening before bed and then just give them a quick wipe the next morning to take off any excess oil.
